Located in southeast Plumas County, Portola is a quaint town known for the Western Pacific Railroad Museum with its extensive collection of train cars, locomotives and the one-of-a-kind Run A Locomotive Program where you can drive a diesel locomotive yourself. Within a one or two hour drive you can view sites such as the acres of bubbling mud pots in Bumpass Hell in Lassen Volcanic National Park; the rare carnivorous plants in Butterfly Valley Botanical Area; Bucks Lake with its 17 miles of shoreline great for fishing for rainbow trout and salmon, waterskiing, swimming; more for those adventurous spirits out there, whitewater rafting near Quincy with Dave Steindorf of American Whitewater might be more your style; or spend more down time wine tasting at The Drunk Brush or grabbing a pint at The Brewing Lair of the Lost Sierra (which also features free 9-course disc golf!).

If none of those interest you, there are 3,500 geocaching sites within 50 miles of Quincy, 11 golf courses and more music festivals than you can count! This area is not just for spring tourist alone, however, with snowmobiling, cross and back country skiing, dog sledding and ice fishing coming in for the winter months. A little bit of everything for anyone, Little Tahoe as it’s lovingly called by locals is a little piece of paradise!
